Who are we?

Scratch is an independent company founded in 1987, based in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Initially a tiny retail specialty record store, Scratch expanded to become a record label in 1991, concert promoters in 1992, a Canadian distributor in 1995, and an international distributor in 1998. We have long been known for our knowledge, diversity, involvement, and support of independent music. We’re confident you’ll notice this quickly; while this is a commerce inspired site, very few other online stores feature such a wide variety of music, even fewer have any sort of knowledge about what they sell, nor feature obscure releases and vinyl. Yes, VINYL…records…phonograph records. We have loads of them, and some of us at Scratch HQ will venture boldly they look better, sound better, feel better, ARE better. Then some of us are more passionate about curling, so take no offense.

What do we sell?

Well, here's a list of the labels we carry. It changes all the time, so if there's something you're looking for, please ask. Basically Scratch has a store as well, so we have a continually rotating batch of music from sources too numerous to possibly list. In general, 99% of the music we sell is independent music....nowhere (except for vinyl) will you find the mark of Sony, Polygram, DGC, Columbia, and their ilk. We have nothing against these labels....but their pricing structure is such that we can't offer a good price because we don't have the buying clout of HMV or Tower or chain stores in general. Major labels do us no favours, so we feel no particular need to support them.. Stylistically we carry all genres of music fitting under the umbrella of independence, but it's not too difficult to discern from our reviews that we hold the more adventurous music nearer to our hearts.

Can I get a catalog of my very own?

Yes. If you don’t want to search or browse our web store, we can email you an Excel file so you can browse offline at your leisure, or print out to leave on the coffee table. It’s an Excel spreadsheet, and over 2 megs, so if you have a slow internet connection/modem, beware it’s a lengthy download. As a further annoyance and a modern example of “you get what you pay for”; those of you with free email services such as Hotmail or Yahoo are unable to receive such a file. Not to be too disparaging, but you need a “real” email address to get the file. Pay $5.00 to somebody somewhere and forget the web-based free email, if only to receive our quite impressive catalog. It has 36000 plus items in it and is searchable according to artist, label, format, etc. Anyone who would like this file please email lube@scratchrecords.com and request our Email Order \catalog file. Please specify Canadian or US dollars. We update the catalog weekly, so request it as often as you’d like. If you would rather a pdf or different file format, please specify and we’ll see what we can do.

How do I search the online store?

The store is searchable according to the following 3 criteria: By Artist, by Title, or by Label (Record Company). Select one of the criteria from the drop down menu by the Search bar, then fill in the Artist, Title, or Label you are searching for. In all searches omit A, AN, & The from the beginning of the search name. Example, if you are looking for releases by The Smugglers, omit The and just type in Smugglers. If you are searching for a person or individual, please enter the Last Name first. Example, if you are looking for releases by Alex Chilton, enter Chilton, Alex, or just Chilton.

top page
How do I browse the store?

You may click on one of the letters of the alphabet below the search bar and this will bring up an alphabetical list of all of the Artists corresponding with the letter you selected. Some of the letters have thousands of titles, so please allow a few moments for the list to load. If you are searching for Various Artist compilations (multiple artists on one release), they are found in the V section abbreviated as V/A. If you would like to browse the store according to recent new arrivals, you may browse the text found in our Email List archives of weekly new archives. The entrance to this section is near the bottom of the front page by the Email List sign up form. Be aware this is a text only section meant as a resource for you to see what’s new. If you see something you want please return to the Search the Store area to locate the item in the store.

What if I have questions or require more information about a product before I decide to buy?

Simple. We call it service, so we invite you to send your queries or concerns to service@scratchrecords.com

top page
How do I order?

The online store features an easy to use shopping cart system. Once you have found the items you want, simply add them to your shopping cart. You may view what’s in your cart at any time by clicking on SHOPPING CART at the top of each page. When you are ready to complete your purchase, simply click CHECK OUT. If you are a first time shopper you will only need to fill out your customer information once, providing you keep your user name and password information.

top page
What kinds of payment do we accept?

Presently we accept VISA, Mastercard, and American Express credit cards. Credit card orders are safely and confidentially transacted on our secure server. If you are still uncomfortable giving credit card information out via the internet, feel free to fax, phone, or mail it in. Please be aware that while our prices are in US Dollars, we cannot charge your credit card in US Dollars as we (as are our bank) are located in Canada. We calculate the Canadian Dollar equivalent the day your order is processed and give you the print out of the currency exchange. When you receive your credit card bill, the amount you are charged should be within a few dimes either way of the original US fund transaction at Check Out. If it is not please let us know and we will investigate. To date, any discrepancies have worked out in the customer's favour.

We also accept money orders, certified checks, and bank drafts. No personal checks, sorry. If you are in Canada, we can also send your order COD (you pay cash when the package is delivered) for a $6.00 charge.

top page
How do we ship?

We offer air and surface mail. It is unregistered. In 20 years of business we have NEVER had a package not reach it's destination. Late? Yes. Lost? No. Canada Post has raised their rates several times of late, so we cannot give you an exact shipping price until after your package is weighed and the destination address considered. The farther the address is away from Vancouver, BC, the more Canada Post charges. Rates for overseas mail will also be calculated individually based on the actual weight of your package. In general they are a little more, but still reasonable. Ultimately you are paying for the shipping, so if you would prefer shipping via another carrier (UPS, Federal Express, etc) we'd be happy to oblige and get you an exact price. Please keep in mind other methods are substantially more expensive. Send your special shipping request to ordering@scratchrecords.com.

top page
What if we are out of stock of what I order?

Unlike other online mail order stores, we actually do warehouse a majority of what we offer. However, shortages can occur. If you order an item that is out of stock, we will email or call you to see if you’d like us to backorder it, and if the shortage results in a partial fill, we’ll need to know if you’d like us to ship what’s in stock as is, or hold it until the order is complete to save you shipping charges. In general we do orders with most of our suppliers frequently and can get your out of stock item back in stock within 2 weeks. If you give us permission to back order we do require a month before you cancel the order, as certain factors are out of our control (supplier competency, pressing shortages, transit time, etc). If we cannot get you the item we will let you know promptly.

top page
Do we take returns?

Sure, for legitimately defective items…or for still sealed items returned within 30 days of purchase. You lose the shipping dimes both directions. If you’ve opened it, sorry Charlie... Please send details of what you want to return and why first to service@scratchrecords.com. We’ll give you the A-OK and anxiously await your package. You bought something and hate it? Not to be negative, but that’s your problem… so you'll just have to have confidence in what you're buying ...because once we've got your money, well we've spent it. We expect your knowledge, opinion, as well as the outside influences that guide one's choices (radio, magazines, videos, peer pressure) to be the reason you buy something,...more than what we tell you. We endeavor to be truthful, but guaranteeing you will be satisfied with what you buy is a bit unrealistic.

I can’t find what I want on the web site!

Well, ask us. We do carry thousands of other items that don’t always make it to the web site. Similarly, our special order and pre-order departments are well acquainted with the notion of getting the job done. Let this address live up to it’s name: service@scratchrecords.com Even if we can’t help you we’ll can’t help you with a smile.

top page
What’s up with the crazy reviews on the items?

Hey, it’s just music, and we’re just a bunch of dorky Canadians. We freely admit that the descriptions are sometimes less than informative…in fact one might say biased and debatable. Please don't be upset if we say something vague or nasty about your favourite band. Essentially we do our best to be fair and accurate, but we operate on deadlines (the same reviews go out to stores at wholesale prices), and often we have an hour to listen to 75 new items...so please don't get worked up about any offensive or downright wrong reviews. We value feedback though...and welcome any inaccuracies pointed out. Send us a private email to commerce@scratchrecords.com (Mr.Commerce writes the bulk of the reviews and is always agreeable to disagreeing) or if you want to world to see, post something to our message board. We also hope you respect our right to not care for something, and that in no way do we judge people who buy things we don't like. We encourage it in fact. What does our opinion matter anyway? We're here to provide serious information on demand...feel free to challenge us. We will be the first to admit this is a peculiar brand of music criticism...we have to balance the somewhat contradictory goals of wanting to be honest, wanting to entertain, and wanting to move some units. Try and understand our plight, for we have to find a way to sleep at night.

Do we have a mailing list?

Oh yeah. That’s how this whole thing started…our popular weekly new release emails that thousands of people have been receiving for a few years now. Join the list. Get off the list. It comes in two colours: Canadian dollars, and American Dollars for those coloured not Canadian. Basically the list gives you a weekly message with just text info for the new releases that have arrived the past week. Those getting the emails often get information several days before the web site is updated, which can be crucial when you want something of a limited nature. Select 'Mailing Archive' in the top menu, fill-in form and watch the fun come streaming to your mailbox!
